| Its determined town-planning expansion, its extensive leisure offer, culture, beaches and sports, its brave challenge for offering new attractions every year, made this town in Malaga the chosen destiny of hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world wishing to spend here their well-deserved holidays.
Firstly, it is necessary to clarify that Benalmádena means three zones: the town, the coast and Arroyo de la Miel. The unstoppable growth of the last two has caused the once physical separation between them to no longer exist. The three of them have their own charm and their own identity. The three of them form a whole which is Benalmádena, a city with a thousand and one attractions. Below we will seduce you with some of these attractions:
The Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church is the most outstanding temple in Benalmádena. It dates back to the seventeenth century, although it was extensively restored in the last century. Near the temple we find the Pre-Columbian Archaeological Museum which was donated by the Mexican archaeologist and painter Felipe Orlando. It gathers more than 400 pre-Columbian pieces and more than 60 neolithic pieces and it has just been completely remodelled.
To walk around all the old quarter of Benalmádena Pueblo is a pleasure because of its typical urban configuration; it is also a pleasure to walk through the Wall Gardens, from where we will enjoy a wide panoramic view of the coastline. At the House of the Artisan, located at the Plaza de España, several artisans endlessly produce their creations in front of the public and later sell them.
Moving down towards the sea we find the Colomares Castle. It is a tribute to the discovery of America and inside there are showcases of enormous wealth. Another castle, the Bil-Bil Castle, awaits for us close to the sea. This castle is a building of nazari style which is used by the town hall for exhibitions, conferences, concerts and civil weddings.
Near the Bil-Bil Castle we find the Puerto Deportivo de Benalmádena (Marina of Benalmádena), one of the most surprising ports and residential complexes in the world, with model facilities and very attractive architecture. The marina, which has twice been awarded the prize for being the “Best Marina in the World”, has had uninterruptedly since 1987, the European Blue Flag for the quality of both its services and water. It has 1,100 berths available.
Culture and sports
The main green zone of the municipality is the Park of the Dove, which covers more than 200,000 m2. Inside the Park we also find the Cacti Garden and the great sculpture to Buddha. The relationship of Benalmádena with this significant religion imported from the East finished last year with the inauguration of the Illumination Funeral Buddhist Monument, the largest in the western world.
Next to the Park of the Dove, the Municipal Outdoor Auditorium, a meeting point where most of the artistic shows organised by the town council are staged. Some years ago it was also considered necessary to construct a building which was intended and expressly designed to be a high specification exhibition centre and that finally allowed Benalmádena to introduce itself onto the national and international circuits for painting and sculpture. That is how the Exhibition Centre of Benalmádena began.
The Equestrian Centre of Benalmádena is located next to the golf course of Torrequebrada. It is sphered by exceptional natural surroundings and it covers more than 25,000 m2.
The Casablanca Rustic Park is a large area of 125,000 m2 which is located between the urbanización de Torremuelle and Benalmádena Pueblo and which has been conserved and conditioned as an area of leisure and initiation to nature.
Selwo Marina is a new park concept with marine fauna which proposes to us an out of this world adventure in which we discover the most representative marine mammals and birds from South America. The Sea Life Benalmádena, on the other hand, is an aquarium where a large number of species from our coast are displayed in an entertaining and educational manner, from sharks through to the most exotic and unusual fish. The aquarium is located right at the marina.
We must not forget the ‘doyen’ of the leisure parks, the Tivoli World, which has been entertaining both children and adults alike for more than thirty years. However, if what you are looking for is a global view of all of this, then nothing better than climbing aboard one of the Cable Cars from Benalmádena, one of the main tourist attractions on the Costa del Sol.
