The 24th Malaga Theatre Festival takes place between 12 January and 3 February, featuring thirteen different works of which six are premières. Major new features this year include the expansion of the list of venues, with the Teatro Cervantes being joined by the Teatro Alameda, the Picasso Museum Auditorium, the Sala Gades and the CAC Malaga. As for the works themselves, particular mention should be made of ‘A Picasso’, an imaginary re-creation of the interrogation of the Malagaborn artist when he was arrested by the Nazis in 1941 (performed and directed by José Sacristán); adaptations of two pieces by Shakespeare, ‘A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream’, in which the woodlands of England are replaced by the Mediterranean, and a version of ‘Henry V’, courtesy of the renowned Italian company Pippo del Bono. Further premières include ‘Like Bees Trapped in Honey’, with Luisa Martín and Félix Gómez, ‘The Prompter’, by Gardi Hutter, and ‘On Love and Other Tales of Love’, by Argentinean actress Norma Aleandro, with texts by Lope de Vega and Gabriel García Márquez, among others. Another notable performance is the production of ‘Cabaret’, the musical which has enjoyed a record-breaking run in Madrid.
