The Lighthouse. To be discovered. Pigeon Park- An urban oasis
Pigeon Park - An urban oasis

One of the Costa del Sol’s green lungs, this leisure park is to be found right in the heart of Benalmádena Costa, its magnificent artificial lake and remarkable cactus garden making it an attraction truly worth visiting.

Covering some 24 acres, it is one of the most important parkland areas on this stretch of the coast, and also the chief natural space in Benalmádena, the only city park anywhere along the coastline on such a scale. It goes by the name of the ‘Parque de la Paloma’.
Within these vast grounds numerous different species of flora and fauna live side by side in harmony, while at the very centre is a great artificial lake where ducks, pelicans, turtles and more happily splash about. Other animals are also to be found out of the water, such as peacocks, parakeets, parrots, rabbits, goats, sheep...
The Parque de la Paloma is one of Benalmádena’s most popular leisure areas, with both residents and tourists alike: an annual figure of one million visits is proof enough. Children can play here in complete safety and freedom, making it a popular spot for families at weekends.
Opened in December 1995, it underwent a slight remodelling last year, when some of the rows of planted trees (originally Catalpa and Cercis) were replaced with 150 new specimens better adapted to the climatic conditions of Benalmádena, introducing such species as Anderytrina falcata, Ficus religiosa, Bahuinia pulpurea, Phoenixa canadiensis and Schinus molle into this remarkable habitat.

The Cactus and Succulents Garden

Another feature of the Parque de la Paloma is the Cactus and Succulents Garden, one of Europe’s largest collections of Cactaceae and other succulent plants.
Home to more than 2,000 specimens of 450 different species, it provides a detailed introduction to this remarkable and attractive type of flora.
Sport and leisure activities are another mainstay of the park, and to mark its tenth anniversary the local council organised a series of events which were very well received, such as yoga, tai chi and qu gong classes. The site is also home to the ‘Monument to Reading’.
