Fashion designers Victorio and Lucchino are Andalusia's new "Ambassadors", according to the 2007 Tourism Awards, no less. These Sevillian designers have been bringing a taste of the south to the world's leading catwalks for more than thirty years now.
The 2007 Andalusia Tourism Awards honoured fashion designers Victorio and Lucchino in the "Ambassadors" category for the "outstanding way in which they represent and publicise the image of Andalusia in a manner which strikes a chord with the tourism sector". In the words of the Deputy Regional Minister for the sector, Ana Gómez, who announced the jury's verdict, the awards highlight "the work performed of companies, organisations and individuals to the benefit of the sector"
José Víctor Rodríguez Caro (Victorio) and José Luis Medina del Corral (Lucchino) have successfully given their creations an original style with an undeniably Andalusian character.
The Victorio & Lucchino brand started out in the world of fashion at the end of the 70s, in the city of Seville, after the pair had met in the design department of the company Disart. Having forged a professional relationship, they decided to go it alone, opening up a store in the Andalusian capital to market their first designs.
In 1985 they produced their debut collection, which was presented at a catwalk show in New York, since when, following the foundation of the Pasarela Cibeles fashion show, they have been presenting two prêt-à-porter collections each year.
In 1984, as a result of the huge demand for their bridal gowns, they decided to create their first bridal collection, presented at a fashion show in Barcelona, establishing themselves as pioneers in a sector which was later to be entered by many other designers.
Over the course of the years Victorio & Lucchino has become a key name on the international fashion scene. Unceasingly innovative, the Sevillian designers have nonetheless always remained true to the essence, tradition and philosophy which defines their particular style.
In 1992, in order to diversify their business, they launched their first scent for women, 'Carmen'. More recently they have ventured into designing jewellery, cars (personalising a Mini) and even designed the fifth floor of the Puerta América hotel in Madrid, sharing 'rooms' with such names as Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Javier Mariscal. They have also been involved in theatre productions (Yerma and La Celestina, for example) and film (The Bodyguard).
2007 is certainly proving to be a special year for these distinguished designers. As well as receiving the "Ambassadors" Andalusia Tourism Award on 28 September, Victorio & Lucchino were married on 15 March at Carmona Town Hall, the two of them perfectly managing to stitch together a successful personal and professional life.
