MÁLAGA: OPEN FOR HOLIDAYS

Texto: Mdp. Fotos: Ayto. Málaga, CAC Málaga, Mdp.
The city of Malaga doesn’t shut up shop for the summer. Quite the opposite, with a wide and varied range of leisure and cultural activities. The traditional August Fair, which this year begins on 10 August with an opening address by singer Pasión Vega, is joined by the Serenatas Luna Joven concerts, the Terral music season, MTV Malaga Summer, along with fantastic exhibitions at the Malaga Picasso Museum, the Picasso Birthplace Foundation and the CAC Malaga arts centre.
FERIA AGOSTO 2007

For nine days, in 2007 running from 10 to 19 August, Malaga lives it up day and night at the biggest fiesta in the city’s calendar. The Feria de Málaga is two festivals in one, first in the historic old town, and by night at the Cortijo de Torres, at the entrance to the city. The daytime events fill the streets of the city centre with the sound of flamenco, salsa, samba, rumba, rock, techno... anything you can sing and dance to. There are as many ways to experience Feria de Agosto as there are partygoers, with activities for every taste and age on offer: bullfights at the La Malagueta bullring, performances of traditional verdiales in the Paseo del Parque, puppet theatre and storytellers for children on the Calle Alcazabilla, horses and carriages promenading around the Cortijo de Torres… And if the festival is at its most vibrantly colourful by day, at night-time the site glows with the light of more than 300,000 bulbs.

PICASSO. SMALL FIGURE. THE COLLECTION IN CONTEXT

The bronze sculpture ‘Pequeña Figura’, or ‘Small Figure’, carved exactly a century ago now, opens the series of exhibitions organised under the title ‘The Collection in Context’, which aims to place selected pieces from the Malaga Picasso Museum’s collection in their historic and artistic setting. The works on display explore the influences of non-Western cultures in this important sculpture, and alongside other Picasso creations which reveal similar characteristics, the exhibition, curated by Marilyn McCully, features works by Gauguin, as well as major pieces from the Americas and Africa. The show runs until 16 September.

MTV SUMMER 07

For the second year running, MTV Spain will be putting on the finest live music in Malaga, featuring performers of the stature of Chayanne, Jamelia and Efecto Mariposa, as part of the MTV Malaga Summer 2007 festival. This major international free festival forms part of the calendar of activities organised for the Feria de Málaga, and will once again take place on La Malagueta beach, which will be the musical focal point on the night of 10 August. The MTV mega-concert will kick-off after the opening ceremony and the fireworks marking the start of the city’s fiesta. Just as last year, when the even proved a great success, more than 150,000 people are expected to attend.

CONCERT: ALEJANDRO SANZ

Alejandro Sanz will be giving the fi rst concert of his Spanish tour at Malaga’s La Rosaleda stadium on 9 August. One of the summer’s most eagerly awaited live events, with Sanz performing songs from his latest album ‘El Tren de los Momentos’.
