The Lighthouse. Leisure. African Spirit
Fuengirola Zoo
(african spirit)
Fuengirola Zoo has unveiled a new show featuring African rhythms and dances as part of its summer night-time programme of visits.
Text & Photos: Roberto Fernández

The African music and dance extravaganza performed by Senegalese group Sico Bana Africa is the latest innovation to be put on by Fuengirola Zoo in July and August for its night-time opening season, immediately following on from the now famous falconry and nocturnal animals show.
The hardest thing will be to stay in your seat as the sound of the drums and the winding, at times crazy, dances of the performers take you to the verge of a spiritual trance straight out of deepest Africa. The audience will learn about the history behind the Yembé, the African drums known since ancient times as ‘news spreaders’ or ‘talking drums’, and used as a form of communication among villages.
This show provides an example of why drums are at the heart of musical creativity in Africa, and how, in the hands of generations of musicians, poets and ordinary individuals, they have kept the history of Africa alive in the memory.

NOCTURNAL LIFE IN THE JUNGLE

Before these performances, and for the fifth year running, visitors have the rare chance to visit a zoo after the sun goes down, to experience nightlife in a tropical jungle As Sumatran tigers, Malayan tapirs, bats and pygmy hippopotami offer a startling sight in the forest clearing. After the night-time tour and before the show, Fuengirola Zoo recommends a truly special candle-lit dinner in the heart of the tropical jungle, surrounded by the sounds of nocturnal animals, transporting diners to distant climes without leaving the Costa del Sol.ln
