MUSEUM HOUSE Housed in the former Town Hall, it features travelling art exhibitions, local craft tools and a recreation of the bedroom which for 30 years was the hiding place of Manuel Cortés Quero, ‘The Mole of Mijas’. The signs on the door say it all: dressedup dried fleas, a dancer carved from a toothpick, a naval battle on a pinhead, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper on a grain of rice, etc. Avda. del Compás, s/n. ................................. 952 589 034 WATCH TOWER MUSEUM Ethnographic and historical museum dedicated to the sea, and the watchtowers which line the coast of Malaga province and were an essential feature of the region’s defences in the 16th century. Entry free of charge. Winter opening hours: Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays, 10 - 14 / 16 - 19 h. Summer: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 - 13 / 20 - 23 h. La Cala de Mijas. C/ Torreón, s/n. ................................. 952 59 03 80 ST.SEBASTIÁN CHURCH Built in the late 17th century, the plasterwork in this church bears the unmistakable hallmarks of the craftsmen who also produced the side chapel and crypt of Malaga’s Convent of Victory in the 18th century. Plaza de la Libertad s/n IGLESIA DE LA INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN Built in the 16th century on the ruins of an ancient castle, and subsequently a mosque, it features three naves, with a Mudejar coffered ceiling in the central one. A defensive bell tower was added in 1510. From the outside, one of the key features to be observed is the square tower which some commentators believe was the tower of the original fortress. La Muralla, s/n .................................. 952 485 022 VIRGEN DE LA PEÑA ERMITAGE Carved from the bare rock by monks of the Order of Mercy in 1548. Inside it houses the image of the patron of Mijas. The story told in the village claims that the image was discovered in 1586 hidden in the walls of the old castle, to prevent it falling into the hands of the Moors eight centuries earlier. Paseo ‘El Compás’ THE WALL, VIEWPOINT AND GARDENS Remains of the former fortress where the settlement was located. The gardens have been designed to ensure there are flowers all year round, while the lookout offers some of the most attractive and impressive views anywhere along the coast. |
